Quantas mulheres programadoras você conhece? Eu já conheci e trabalhei com três delas, em duas equipes diferentes cheias de (claro) homens.

E quantas você já conheceu que até tentaram ir para a área de programação mas desistiram? Eu já vi essa situação inúmeras vezes.

Semana passad, a iTWire noticiou que uma desenvolvedora open-source estaria desistindo da área tecnológica devido aos assédios que ela vem sofrendo. O que é triste, pois qualquer um que trabalhe nessa área sabe que muitos homens são sim machistas.

Não, não estou falando de brincadeiras e piadas (esse é o menor dos problemas).

Burocra: o Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica (CADE), órgão brasileiro ligado ao Ministério da Justiça encarregado de evitar abusos de poder econômico, está encrencando com o Grupo Buscapé por causa das 4 startups vencedoras do concurso Sua ideia vale 1 milhão que o grupo decidiu virar sócio não-controlador, com 30%. Ora bolas, depois que eles já compraram participação em outras 12 empresas da área… Será que foi sempre assim? E parece que o “desestímulo” imposto para que eles desistam da compra é pagar a mesma quantidade para os cofres públicos, num total estimado de R$ 1,2 milhão. Ordem e Progresso? Dá um tempo! Nem vou comentar. O que vocês acham?

O governo Brasileiro, com seus burocratas e máquina inchada, sempre tenta dar um jeito de se meter aonde não deveria para tentar tirar uma casquinha. Qual o incentivo que o Buscapé terão para continuar com essa ótima iniciativa de investir em startups em terras brasileiras?

Se o governo quer mais dinheiro, que deixe a iniciativa privada investir livremente e gerar mais empregos.

Não é ele (governo) quem vai gerar melhora para o país metendo a mão em dinheiro alheio além do que já é cobrado em impostos. As melhorias que o país precisa só vai acontecer quando realmente houver vontade das pessoas em criar um novo Google por aqui, em criar algo que gere dinheiro e emprego qualificado.

Porém, para isso investidores precisam se sentir seguros de que não vão precisar pagar a mesma quantia para um governo deficitário e engolidor de dinheiro.

I love about.me. Really. I registered myself on earlier days when they were taking email for beta launch.

But what's happening? I just noticed this now:

19 links in "Top Link Sources". 13 are legit. 5 are spam sites.

Spammers really think this works? There is no way to about.me know this sources and block them to don't appear on my list?

"Top Link Sources" is one the best about.me resources, it's always good to know from where they're talking about you. Spam is a plague, if about.me don't start kill that now, they will be in serious trouble later (just see Twitter's endless fight against spammer profiles).

I remember when I started this. This was a Saturday and I was doing nothing and in a boredom mood.

While cleaning my read list of the week, I saw a lot of GitHub links of awesome projects and libraries. I was clicking in 'watch' on all of them as usual because, at that time, no service (like Delicious or Evernote) would be a good and easy way to keep this list for my future needs.

So, a thought sparkled from my bored mind: hey! What about a bookmark app to this projects, everything inside a github repo?

Then I started coding this idea in Python, as a reason to learn Flask and see how Google App Engine works.

GitHub API is pretty awesome. They let you do almost everything in a repo (a little hard sometimes, because they built the API to follow Git's workflow). I'm not the one to say how good is this API, but it doesn't mean I hadn't any kind of problem. But everything went better than expected.

After I coded about 60-70% of the project, I discovered ZooTool (what works for my needs to collect GitHub projects) and other (bigger) projects appeared. These projects need more from my attention and that's why I'm writing this: I released the source code in GitHub, so if you're interested in this project (or bored), you can fork it and finish as you wish.

The README contains my initial ideas, what's ready and what's missing. Fork it, give it any direction you wish, forgive any bad code I've wrote (I'm a PHP, C# and Objective-C coder trying to learn Python), publish it and show me the result.

engineers generally want to work on infrastructure, scalability and “hard problems” — that’s where all the prestige is.  can be hard to get engineers excited about working on front-end projects and user interfaces.  this is the opposite of what you find in some consumer businesses where everyone wants to work on stuff that customers touch so you can point to a particular user experience and say “I built that.”  At facebook, the back-end stuff like news feed algorithms, ad-targeting algorithms, memcache optimizations, etc. are the juicy projects that engineers want.

engineers must be present in a specific IRC channel for “roll call” before the release begins or else suffer a public “shaming”

Artigo muito interessante, a cultura de "developer-driven" é excelente pois encoraja os desenvolvedores a criar coisas novas e os força a não cometerem (muitos) erros. Mas também tem o outro lado: poucos querem fazer o trabalho de front-end e UX, então a "developer-driven culture" precisa ter alguém para balancear isso.

Imaginary Friends: I like that. It makes me laugh, and, in a way, its true. A lot of the people I interact with on a weekly basis exist online (at least from my perspective). I don't actually know them, but I know about them. Much like friends, I have come to trust and respect their opinions and tastes... particularly where music is concerned.

O Chile ganha milhões todos os anos com mineração, mas eles já sabem que isso não irá durar para sempre. Então por que não investir em algo que sempre trouxe (muito) retorno? Precisamos parar de dar dinheiro para Eikes Batistas e para agricultores de grandes latifúndios. Você, desenvolvedor, precisa aprender a correr riscos e parar de procurar emprego público ou cargos de gerência somente pelo status. Você, desenvolvedor, precisa fazer código, precisa mudar conceitos, precisa criar coisas do zero.

Precisamos obrigar nossos governantes a criar infra-estrutura decente para isso. Precisamos de incentivos para criarmos hosts brasileiros que sejam competitivos para que a nossa internet fique mais rápida.

Não, não estou falando para você largar seu emprego imediatamente. Migre.me e Boo-Box são exemplos de que é possível começar um projeto durante o tempo livre e ele crescer, o Vale do Silício sempre funcionou assim. A app que eu criei, a Feriados 2011, é um exemplo que não precisa se começar com algo grandioso para que seja bem visto e faça sucesso. Migre.me e Boo-Box começaram como idéias a partir de necessidades específicas. Facebook começou de maneira privada, somente para estudantes.

Criem, reunam-se, compartilhem código, não sigam modinhas de programação somente por que outro programador também o faz.

Dinheiro está chegando, você vai ficar parado esperando que ele fique com administradores ou com Eikes Batistas para projetos básicos?

Dois artigos que falam sobre o mantra "Everything is an object" que está cada vez mais forte entre programadores. Concordo com alguns pontos que dizem, mas OOP pra mim continua sendo mais questão de organização de código do que qualquer outra coisa. Ficar preso em padrões ou modinhas de programação é perda de tempo, a menos que você realmente precise.

We are perfectly comfortable adapting our expectations and our behavior in our daily lives depending on the context in which we find ourselves, but the programs we write break immediately if their context changes.

I've said that OOP's ontology is the opposite of the naturalist's ontology. Is this a problem? Yes, and here is why. The naturalist's ontology is resilient to new discoveries. If we know nothing of penguins and we discover a bird that cannot fly but pursues its prey by swimming, we can re-arrange our ontology without disturbing any existing birds. The ontology is abstract, so it is decoupled from existing nature.

I think it’s about time that we all take a step back and a deep breath and fucking do something: Educate yourself! Go and learn about different cultures, different ways of life and the history of current conflicts. Don’t rely on a single source of information, but double check, triple check, question everything and try to form your own opinion. Go vote! You don’t like any party? Join one and try to change it, or start your own. When you have to, go to the streets to protest. Don’t buy into someone else’s dream, but try to live your own! It’s hard, especially compared to sitting around and complaining, but it may be worth it. Stop the world from becoming smaller again! Every so often, remind yourself that the web is not only a distribution medium for cat pictures, but also a tool for knowledge transfer and change. This is more a reminder to myself than advice for anyone else.

If the second argument to MD5 is true, it will return ugly raw bits instead of a nice hex string. Raw MD5 hashes are dangerous in SQL statements because they can contain characters with special meaning to MySQL. The raw data could, for example, contain quotes (' or ") that would allow SQL injection.
